Bacalar Day 4

Friday, March 11, 2022

Today’s big event was a sailing excursion on the lagoon. I slathered on the sunscreen, including my eyelids, and headed down to hail a taxi. The sailboat set off near cocolitas which helped make things easy for me. This time my taxi cost 50 pesos. He dropped me off at cocolita’s and I walked the rest of the way.

About to board our sailboat

Our sailboat included two sailors, originally from Argentina, and four women. One woman was from Mexico City, and the other two were from Chicago and Minnesota. The sailor mistook Minnesota for Venezuala and created much confusion when he spoke to her in Spanish. We all had a very good time. We made stops at the pirate channels and the black cenote before passing bird island and a less visited island where we soaked in the water. Pirates channel connects the lagoon with the ocean, although it did not appear to be very deep in most places. The black cenote is 180m deep, the depth giving it it’s dark color. Bird Island is very popular with the American stork, a large white bird with black wings. They don’t frequent any of the other islands on the lagoon only this one.

I spent most of the time getting to know the girls from Wisconsin. They were staying at an all-inclusive in Tulum, but rented a car because they wanted to see as much as they could in their week here. I remember taking similar vacations where I crammed as much as possible into my precious time off. No more of that for me. We had a good day together and decided to get dinner afterwards. Of course I anticipated asking for a ride back into town, but getting dinner together was even better. Once we were back on land, Stacy began to vape. I didn’t know people still did that. I added her into my phone as Stacy Bacalar vape.

We went to dinner at Kai Pez and had a really nice spread sitting next to the water. Guacamole, octopus, tikin xic, margaritas, etc. We were hungry after a long day of sailing and we enjoyed every bit of it. After dinner, Leah and Stacy headed back for Tulum.
