Deb taught me how to peel and slice a mango this morning. It had a much bolder flavor than I imagined. We also agreed that the mini bananas taste almost exactly like regular bananas. Everyone selling them says they taste different but I don’t think that they do.
When peeling the mini banana, ants crawled out of the crevice between the peel and the tip of the fruit. That’s because the kitchen cabinets (and kitchen as a whole) have tiny ants crawling all over. It leaves a lot to be desired. The rooms aren’t bad, but the kitchen is not great.
Beach
We agreed to head up to Progreso today to go to the beach. Emily, James and crew are also heading to Progreso. Deb and I took the bus for about $2 round trip while they took Uber and Didi. Their Uber/Didi trips cost about $14 one way. Not bad for a 30 to 45 minute drive. We may use that to go elsewhere one of these days. We grabbed lunch at a Cuban place on the beach then soaked up the sunshine. It was a great day to be at the beach. Probably about 80 with a light breeze and lots of sunshine. Again, I stopped into an OXXO for some drinks, including Topo Chico. After enjoying the beach for a few hours, we took the bus back. This time I remembered to get off at a stop before the main terminal as the walk is a little shorter from there.
I skipped dinner, opting for some of the mixed nuts that I packed from home. Deb and I discussed our options for day trips. In the running are Uxmal, Dzibilchaltún, and Celestun. We think we may take an Uber up to Dzibilchaltún we’re fairly uncertain about the flamingo reserve in Celestun because it’s 2 hours away, hit or miss reviews, and nothing else on the way. In an area with so much to offer, that might not be good enough. After 2 hours of reading and debating, we decided to rent a car in the morning and drive to the cenote reserve (Humon). Time willing, we’ll also stop by Izamal, the yellow city, where every single building in town is painted the exact same shade of yellow.
