Merida Day 11

Saturday, March 5, 2022

This morning was a nice, slow, casual morning. It felt great not having any anxiety over making plans that required a lot of coordination. Eventually, after enjoying the peaceful morning, Deb and I packed up our backpacks and took a Didi up to Las Dunas Beach. It felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves. This is at the tail end of the beach so there is very little tourism.

We were going to lay out but the wind was kicking up sand so instead we walked into the nearby town, Chuburna. When we got to where we were going, a hacienda that Deb wanted to check out, we were both pretty hungry. We found a great restaurant nearby, Cristo Rey. Very spacious, completely shaded and every dish looked appetizing. We ordered a couple of drinks, several plates of food and really enjoyed ourselves. I got a strawberry mojito that came in a small glass with a long straw. I feel lucky not to have poked my eye out! We kept laughing over the length of the straw. It just looked silly in that little glass.

The straw steals the show

Today was so different than most other days. It was very laid back, aided by the relaxing atmosphere of an uncrowded beach. Before we know it it was 4:00. We picked up some water and flagged down the van to take us back to Progreso. It was 20 pesos for the ride. From there, we opted to take the bus back to Merida (21 pesos), then walked back home.

Income

Today I received word that my current tenant is going to extend from 3 weeks to 2.5 months. That helps me feel a little less concerned about the prospect of leaving my paid-for place here in Merida and staying in some nicer places along the eastern coast of Quintana Roo. I plan to take a bus to Bacalar, then head north over the course of my last 2 weeks. Very excited about it!
